Michael T. Milano, M.D., Ph.D.
As a member of the Asbestos.net Mesothelioma and Asbestos Cancer Support Center, Dr. Milano has reviewed the majority of the medical related information on the Asbestos.net site. Dr. Milanos practice focuses on the care of patients with primary brain tumors, brain metastases, spine tumors, benign intracranial tumors (such as pituitary tumors, acoustic neuromas and meningiomas) and trigeminal neuralgia. Dr. Milano also treats patients with lung cancer and other thoracic tumors, head and neck cancer and metastatic cancer. He is involved in clinical research in all of these areas. Although a mere eight years out of medical school and just shy of his fortieth birthday, Dr. Michael T. Milano has built an impressive curricula vita in a remarkably short amount of time. In his youth, he was a member of the National Honor Society chapter at McQuaid Jesuit High School and a Notre Dame Scholar at the University of Notre Dame. It was at Notre Dame that young Milano completed his undergraduate studies in physics, participating in the universitys Honors Program and securing a place for himself on both the UND and the National Deans List all four years. During his undergraduate years, Dr. Milano was initiated into Alpha Epsilon Delta, an honor fraternity for pre-med students, and Phi Beta Kappa, a society that recognizes and promotes achievement in a wide range of academic fields. Milano graduated from UND in 1992 with a BS in Physics and in the same year won the Outstanding Senior Physics Major Award. Michael Milano then returned to his native Rochester, New York for his medical studies, spending the summer before beginning his formal medical training as a research scholar at the Strong Childrens Research Center. The list of awards he earned during his eight years at the prestigious University of Rochester School of Medicine and Dentistry are almost too numerous to list here; these include The Deans Research Fellowship, an Academic Commendation, the George V. Metzger Award as well as a Young Investigator Travel Award, which enabled him to travel to the International Workshop on Radiation Damage to DNA in 1997. Since earning his PhD in Biophysics in 1998 and MD in 2000, Dr. Milano has held a number of impressive posts not only in the United States, but in Canada and the UK as well. From 2001 to 2005, he participated in the Residency Program in Radiation Oncology at the University of Chicago, serving as Chief Resident from 2003-2004. In 2004, Dr. Milano was also a Visiting Resident at Princess Margaret Hospital in Toronto and an Honorary Observer at Royal Marsden Hospital in London. Dr. Milanos own research and list of academic and scientific publications are hardly less impressive; to date, he has co-authored over twenty scientific papers on the subject of oncology and the effects of radiation on malignant tumors. These papers have been published in the International Journal of Radiation Oncology Biology Physics, Breast Cancer Research and Treatment and other prominent medical journals. Most recently, he and five colleagues completed and published the findings of a study in the journal Cancer, which is entitled A prospective pilot study of curative-intent stereotactic body radiation therapy in patients with 5 or fewer oligometastatic lesions, dealing with new kinds of radiation treatments for breast cancer patients.Dr. Milano is certified by the Radiation Oncology Boards and licensed to practice medicine in New York State. He currently resides in Rochester, New York, where he continues his involvement in medical education and cancer research.
