Mesothelioma and Asbestos Litigation
Mesothelioma is a rare form of cancer resulting from asbestos exposure. If you have been diagnosed with mesothelioma, our lawyers can help you hold the party (or parties) responsible for your asbestos exposure legally liable for their negligence. At the Locks Law Firm, our Pennsylvania, New York, and New Jersey mesothelioma attorneys can help you obtain the compensation to which you and your family are entitled. Although the effects of asbestos have been known to be deadly for years, many companies chose to do nothing. Even more egregiously, many hid the truth from their employees and the general public. Because the latency period (the time between exposure and the appearance of the disease's symptoms) for mesothelioma may range from 15 to 50 years, victims who were exposed to asbestos or products containing asbestos decades ago may only now be experiencing its effects. Our mesothelioma attorneys have helped many victims and their families secure favorable verdicts and settlements. If you have been recently diagnosed with mesothelioma or another asbestos-related condition, contact the knowledgeable, experienced personal injury lawyers at the Locks Law Firm and schedule a consultation.
What is mesothelioma?
Mesothelioma is a type of cancer, caused by asbestos exposure, that begins in the mesothelium (the tissue that protects the lungs, stomach, heart, and other organs) and can quickly metastasize throughout the body. Most frequently, mesothelioma develops in the cells lining the chest cavity (the pleura) or the abdomen (the peritoneum). Most people with malignant mesothelioma have worked at jobs where they inhaled asbestos. Others have been exposed to asbestos in a household or workplace environment, often without knowing it. Asbestos exposure that lasts as little as one or two months can result in mesothelioma developing 15 to 50 years later. People exposed decades ago are now being diagnosed with mesothelioma due to the disease's long latency period.
If you or a family member was exposed to asbestos and now suffers from mesothelioma or another asbestos-related disease, you have rights as a victim of a dangerous product. Contact the Locks Law Firm at our Pennsylvania, New Jersey, or New York office for a consultation with our mesothelioma attorneys. We help our clients establish liability and attain the financial compensation to which they and their families are entitled.

Asbestos and Mesothelioma FAQs
Mesothelioma Statistics
According to the National Cancer Institute, approximately 2,000 new cases of mesothelioma are diagnosed in the United States each year. Approximately 8 million people nationwide have been exposed to asbestos in the workplace.
In the fall of 2004, the Centers for Disease Control reported a surge in deaths related to asbestos exposure. Although asbestos use has dramatically decreased over the last several decades, asbestos-related deaths are rising. The CDC estimated that the mortality rate is expected to increase for at least another decade.
Mesothelioma is almost always fatal; the average survival rate for someone with malignant mesothelioma is 11 months. Race and gender do not factor into the development of malignant mesothelioma, as asbestos exposure is thought to be the most important risk factor. Mesothelioma has a peak incidence about 40 years after asbestos exposure, and it commonly develops when a person is between 50 and 70 years of age.

Mesothelioma Treatments
Mesothelioma is an incurable disease. However, if mesothelioma is diagnosed early, the quality and length of the patient's life may be greatly improved. There are three common treatments for mesothelioma: surgery, chemotherapy, and radiation therapy. Often, the three procedures are used in combination to provide the most thorough and effective treatment.
Additionally, new mesothelioma treatments have been researched and developed with the hope of yielding better results than traditional methods. New mesothelioma treatments include:
- Development of new chemotherapy agents
- Immunotherapy
- Intensity-modulated radiation therapy (IMRT)
- Gene therapy
- Photodynamic therapy (PDT)
