After the Storm: Finding and Hiring the Right Contractor
Posted on Updated on
The recent severe weather in the Midwest is a reminder we can experience significant storm damage to our homes anytime of the year. Unfortunately, these storms also bring out many roofers, contractors, and workers who all want your repair business. When a storm hits a community, these workers travel from other cities and other states to try and gain your business. How do you as a consumer sift through the sales pitches and pick a reputable contractor?
A good place to start is with your friends and neighbors. They are an excellent resource and can share their own experiences with these individuals, whether good and bad. You can also refer to online resources such as Angies List, or check with the Better Business Bureau for complaints. If you have made an insurance claim for the damage, you can also ask your adjuster or insurance agent for recommendations.
If your contractor is not from your area, you need to be even more diligent with your research. Ask the contractor for references and ask specific questions about their work crews and their warranties. For example, what happens if your roof leaks six months after the work has been completed? Will the contractor honor the warranty if they are located in another city or state? Its also a good idea to ask if the company has brought their own crews or will they hire day laborers to complete the work. The quality of work is probably better with a company who uses their own crew.
Dealing with contractors and repairs to your home can be very stressful. Arm yourself with research and knowledge before you commit to a company and the process will go much smoother. You can find more tips on hiring contractors on our website.
